PAX 2009 – Upper Deck Entertainment WoW:TCG

Posted on 07 September 2009 by Spencer

So on Saturday, GillsRider joined ClassicMoments and I at the show.  I figured, what better way to welcome him to PAX than to kick his ass at some World of Warcraft: Trading Card Game from Upper Deck Entertainment!  I really wanted to check out the other options PAX had to offer; video games are not the only medium of gaming entertainment, wouldn’t you agree?  There were truly some amazing video games being demoed in the exhibition hall, but you can only stand in front of blaring loudspeakers and huge LCD TV’s for so long until your brain turns to mush.

So we headed over to the Upper Deck Entertainment booth, which was nice and flashy, and had quite a few demo stations set up to play demo games of both the World of Warcraft Miniatures game and the World of Warcraft: Trading Card Game.  I am already a fan of the Miniatures game, so I opted to help GillsRider out a bit by leveling the playing field and picking the game I didn’t know how to play (though I do know how to play other TCG’s…so he was, of course, in for a massive defeat from the start).

The nice demo leader from UDE (I swear I have his name written down somewhere…sorry nameless UDE rep!) set me up with a Horde deck, and GR up with an Alliance deck and held our hands through the first few turns of play.  If you’ve ever played any sort of TCG/CCG before, you will quickly get the hang of it.  You can play any card in your hand face down as a resource (or play a quest card face up as a resource), then you turn your resource cards sideways to play various other cards in your hand.  The object of the game is to defeat the enemy hero before he defeats you!

My Horde Warrior went by the name of Warmaster Bojo, GR’s Alliance Hunter by the name of Chaigon Steelsight.  Really, they went by the names of “super-awesome-smash-face guy” and “pansy-bow-plunker-who-will-get-face-smashed-in-guy.”  At least until GR thwacked me a good one with his sneaky pet to shut me up.

The game was very close!  I like to talk the big talk, but I ended up killing Chaigon Steelsight in the nick of time, one turn before she could have struck down my amazing Warmaster Bojo (Boj for short, he likes it when you call him that).  The game ended as I slapped down a big sword, which allowed me to attack for 4 damage instead of the usual 3 my sword was doing.  GR’s hero was 22/28 damage, and I had an ally out who was able to attack him for 2.  Ally smash = 2, sword smash = 4, 2 +4 = VICTORYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!

If you guys are interested in the card games, it’s really a lot of fun.  It was easy to pick up, and the decks were full of flavor.  The Hunter deck played very differently from the Warrior deck, and if you are a WoW fan, you’ve gotta check it out.  You can even learn how to play online by clicking here: http://entertainment.upperdeck.com/wow/en/howtoplay/default.aspx
