16 Shot! Shooting Watch for DSi

Posted on 13 July 2010 by GillRider

Hudson Soft is bringin’ it real old school with 16 Shot! Shooting Watch. I’d imagine it’s a bit difficult to tell what the game is about from the title, but in reality, it pretty much describes exactly what the game is.

16 Shot! Shooting Watch is a remake of the original Shooting Watch, which was released by Hudson Soft in 1987. So, what is a shooting watch?

It’s a Japanese measuring device to see what your physical capacity for gaming is: it measure how fast you can tap two buttons within a 10 second span. The world record is held by Toshiyuki Takahashi, or better known as Takahashi Meijin (高橋名人), at an average of 16 shots per second! This alone has made him a video gaming icon in Japan.

Hudson brings this retro, hardcore challenge back onto the DS to give everybody a chance to challenge the king. But of course, it’s not just a recreation. This game includes many features, such as a “one-button” style and “two-button” style to accommodate for different players’ preferences, as well as real-time progress-tracking graphs. And of course, the best scores are kept on local leaderboards, and the top five scorers get to leave their autograph as well. Oh, and this game also has a stopwatch and slot machine mode… you know, just for kicks.

Are you ready to take on the video gaming legend? 16 Shots! Shooting Watch is available now on DSi Ware.

Nintendo to release pink and blue Wii remotes and more

Posted on 14 December 2009 by GillRider

Nintendo has just been popping out games, both on disc and in downloadable format, like crazy, and they are defiintely looking to keep this momentum for this holiday season. We’ve recieved a huge list of Wii and DS/DSi releases. I will highlight some of them below, and for those interested, the list will be posted at the bottom of the article. Enjoy!

First and foremost, check out these Wii Remotes! Starting February 14th, 2010, gamers will be able to play the Wii  with Blue and Pink Wii remotes. They will come bundled with the Wii MotionPlus accessory. Now, onto the games!

This is the game I’m looking forward to, above all, from Nintendo: Tastunoko VS Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars. This is going to be awesome! Some of you may remember that I played this at PAX back in September. The control scheme is very different from any of the VS fighting games that capcom has released, creating a unique feel to this title. Fighting fans are definitely in for a treat with this one. This one is set to release for January 26, 2010

I’m gonna be honest with you guys here; I’m looking forward to the next Pokemon installment. I’m not ashamed to say it. Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver are the next gen portable remake of Pokemon Gold and Silver, released back in 1999. Pokemon Gold was the first Pokemon I played, and none of its predecessors nor successors have come close to beating my initial Pokemon experience. I’m excited to relive that experience on the DS, with enhance gameplay and graphics. There. I said it. I like Pokemon. Watch out for this in on March 14, 2010.

One more game worth looking into is WarioWare D.I.Y. This will be the newest installment of the WarioWare series, and arguably the most interesting one. You will actually be able to design your own micro-games and share them with others via a broadband Internet connection and Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. You will have total control over the micro-games, from characters and environemtns, to the action and purpose of these micro-games. This one is set for release on March 28, 2010.NTR_WarioWareD_02char1_E3_jpg_jpgcopy

REVIEW – TekCase for DSi

REVIEW – TekCase for DSi

Posted on 29 August 2009 by ClassicMoments

There are many products that claims to protect your DSi.
But this one’s a bit different. It protects a bit more than just a thin layer of plastic, but also provide extra batter life. It also includes a extra USB wall charger with USB to Mini USB cable.

It’s TekCase for DSi from TeknoCreations.

From the picture, it looks like a heavy-duty armor for DSi. It probably is, compared to many other cases out there; this is the largest DSi protection case we’ve seen so far. It comes with two flavors; black and pink. Though we’re reviewing the TekCase for DSi, there’s also TekCase for DS Lite users so this review would apply on both DSi and DS Lite users.

It looks heavy, right? Surprisingly, it doesn’t add much weight than it looks. We expected lots more weight to it because TekCase for DSi includes extra batter on the bottom of case that extends DSi battery life almost three times. TeknoCreation advertises that it adds about 4 oz. Do we believe them? We sure do. Do we also test the products the way it should be? You bet. We used a traditional scale to measured the exact weight of TekCase. The result: a little less than 120 grams, which translates to about 4.1 oz, matching TeknoCreation’s advertising. Awesome to add protections and extra battery life for about 4 oz!

TekCase-for-DSi-Black-03

TekCase for DSi uses the polycarbonate shell, with glossy coating. It looks nice from some distance, but if you look closely enough with right angle, you might be able to catch the small scratches with fingerprints. It would bother some people, as we’ve seen people deducting scores from reviews for the fingerprints mark on the product,  but for many of us it wouldn’t matter much.  After all, you’re not carrying your DSi to show off its matte finish beauty; you bring it around to play games.

TekCase covers the bottom of DSi as well, so it would completely cover the stylus pen area. So how would you take them out? There’s a small button on the bottom that helps stylus pen to pop out. Because TekCase adds about a centimeter to the case, we were concerned about putting the stylus pen all the way back in, but it didn’t have any problem; we could put stylus pen back in just fine.

The case itself utilize the USB connectivity. The package comes with a USB wall charger with USB to USB Mini cable. We think it’s a welcome addition to the DSi because USB is very universal and easy to purchase from almost any electronic stores. You can also take advantage of any USB chargers that you already have, like car chargers and etc. The downside of using this case is that you will not be able to use the DSi power connection anymore once you install TekCase. It’s not really a negative, since USB is more widely use format.

TekCase-for-DSi-Black-04

If we have to pick another downside, it would be the size and an little extra weight, but for its protection and USB connectivity, many gamers would find this trade off a worthy one. Yes, it might add a centimeter or two here and there, but you would also feel more confident about bringing your DSi anywhere. Another thing concerned us a bit is when you uninstall the TekCase, it was a bit tight on the volume buttons. They are rubber and the pressure to the buttons can be easily fixed buy pushing them down while uninstalling. We actually uninstalled it couple of time before even noticing it so it’s not a problem but some of us are just extra careful.

Let’s face it; many of use play DSi more within our home. We play seating on our own comfortable sofa or a chair, or while doing business in the restroom. There are exceptions but even then, we don’t hold up DSi playing games while we walking or driving around the street.

The TekCase for DSi might not be a good addition if you’re looking for an absolute mobility to your DSi. But even then,  adding a good amount of protection with almost three times the battery power for around $30, TekCase for DSi is a very smart investment to your DSi no matter how you look at it.

Our Score: 9 /10

One of the best DSi case out there, if you don’t mind the size.

REVIEW – 10 in 1 Essential Travel Kit for DSi by Penguin United

Posted on 27 August 2009 by ClassicMoments

Nintendo DSi is a very friendly companion if you’re traveling somewhere. After all, DSi is a portable gaming device, and it is designed for mobility so many people bring them anywhere they can. And though DSi’s camera quality isn’t top-notch, many people still enjoy taking pictures using DSi camera software. We’ve seen it at least couple of people from expos and conventions taking pictures from DSi.

But taking DSi to places is not a easy task, at least for bringing accessories and protecting your DSi. People who would enjoy DSi at home would even find this hard, organizing every accessories and software while protecting the gears. And for that, we’ve found an answer; 10 in 1 Essential Travel Kit for DSi by Penguin United.

Penguin-United-10-in-1-Essential-Travel-Kit-for-DSi-review-01

Do you hear the angel choir?

As we received the product, the instinct of being a reviewer kicked in with mockery and criticism  of third-party accessories quality. And to prove our careless decision, we decided to abuse this travel kit with every opportunities we have. So what’s the verdict? Read on.

10 in 1 Essential Travel Kit for DSi has covers from necessity to convenience. The package includes screen protectors, cleaning cloth, external body protector, 24 game card cartridge pouch, stereo earphone, car charger, 3 stylus replacement and a carrying case that fits many of included accessories.

Let’s start with the protection of your investment here. The screen protector is almost a required accessory for many of DS gamers; no matter how thick the touch screen can be, we always find a way to scratch that screen with ease. We have tested the adhesive protection for screens, and it does what it claims. It protects it, and we had no visual or touch-sensitive problems whatsoever.

Another DSi protection you get from the package is the external body protector. If you purchased the DSi, the immediate difference that you would notice is the matte finish of the casing body. People have different taste of coating, but in my personal experience, it feels like I can scratch the DSi body with my fingernail. And for me, the thin layer of glossy protector comforts me a bit more about protecting DSi. Many will find it useful since it won’t add many weight and thickness than the other heavy-duty solutions, yet still manages to add some layers of protection. And cleaning cloth was soft enough to be used inside and outside of DSi. We wouldn’t recommend using it with screen unless if it has the screen protector though.

Penguin-United-10-in-1-Essential-Travel-Kit-for-DSi-review-02
The next item is the earphone and stylus. It actually matches up the color of  first North America release versions of DSi; black and cyan. The difference that we noticed is that two stylus pen has black body, but the tip is actually cyan. If you want to stand out from the crowd, you can use that multicolored stylus pen.

Our review labs have a collection of headphones and earphones, from $30 Panasonic earphones to AKG K271 Studio, and others in-between to choose from. We take sound seriously and never underestimate the audio department unlike many others. To make it short, the sound quality of the included earphone actually did well. We didn’t hear any excessive noise even on the maximum volume from DSi. We tried “Daigasso! Band Brother” to see if it captured every instruments within the game. Many of our editors were satisfied with the quality of earphone. Though it wasn’t as good as $30 retail headphones, it actually sounded better than the DSi speakers in many cases, and it was loud enough to hear your game in noisy environment. This probably means DSi 1/4″ output jack has better sound quality than the DSi speaker, but no doubt it helps. The biggest concern about the headphone was design. Many of earphones nowadays are canalphones, designed to fit into ear canal. The earphone didn’t fit on some of our testers which was a downer.

Penguin-United-10-in-1-Essential-Travel-Kit-for-DSi-review-03
The next item is the game card cartridge pouch, which can hold upto 24 cartridges. The cartridges is inserted sideways, and we think that it is purposely designed from cartridges accidentally falling off from the holders. It is light and well designed, and does its job.

Penguin-United-10-in-1-Essential-Travel-Kit-for-DSi-review-04
The item that really caught our attention is the carrying case. As you can observe from the picture above, you can bring an extra stylus pen just in case, with two cartridges and a DSi charger in just one bad. Clean and minialist design with a handle, this carry case is no doubt most popular item among our editors and testers. Though it’s doesn’t provide crush-proof structure, it has small amount of cushions here and there. If you’re going somewhere without an electrical outlets, but bringing your car, the car charger also come in handy.

Penguin-United-10-in-1-Essential-Travel-Kit-for-DSi-review-05
So with our many road test, sometimes abusing the product for days, we came to conclusion that 10 in 1 Essential Travel Kit for DSi is absolutely useful. It doesn’t have to only useful to the travelers. Many components such as screen and body protector, extra stylus pen is always helpful no matter where you enjoy your DSi. And for the frequent travelers, this kit has everything you can think of, or need for bringing DSi. And for its price (currently, many places sell for about $23 + shipping), this travel kit is a winner.

Our Score: 8.5 /10

Traveling or not, this kit can your DSi’s best friend for awhile.
