Cogitate reaches 1 million plays

Posted on 26 October 2009 by GillRider

Are you a puzzle game fan? Do you like freedom? Do you like gravity?

If you answered yes to the above questions… and even if you didn’t, there’s a viral game you have to try: Cogitate.cogitate-online-game

Launched earlier this year, this web-based puzzler was designed by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) to promote IET Discover, their global social bookmarking site and Inspec Direct, their online research tool. Within four weeks, it attracted over half a million players, and now, it has passed the one million mark.

The game is quite simple yet brilliant. The goal of the game is to get the golden gear into a bag located somewhere on the level using LEGO TECHNIC pieces. Your arsenal of tools include gears, cogitate_01beams, conveyors, motors, and most importantly, gravity. There is a cost to each piece of tool you use. Your score is calculated based on how fast you do it, how much resources you’ve used, and how creative your solution was.

The addictive fun doesn’t stop at the 10 pre-set levels. You can play levels designed by other users, and you can create your own levels. It uses a high-tech physics simulator, allowing boundless possibilities of level designs and their respective solutions.

It might be a little difficult to picture this just from writing so take a look at this:

As you can see, this game gives you so much freedom to be creative, efficient, or just crazy. And the great thing about this is that it literally takes about 2 min to figure out the basics. Of course, it takes a little longer to figure out the finer details of how these pieces work together, but even while you’re figuring it out by trial and error, it’s great fun. I guarantee time will just fly when playing this. Of course, not everyone may go nuts about it, but if you give it time, everyone can appreciate its simplicity, ingenuity and user friendly learning curve.

You can get your creative fix here.
