DLC REVIEW – ZEN Pinball: Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 Table for PS3

Posted on 28 January 2010 by ClassicMoments

There’s something special about this ZEN Pinball DLC; Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 table.

Is it yet another perfect table for ZEN Pinball? Yes.
Does it carry the same excellence in pinball physics? Yes.

Honestly, when we heard about this ZEN Pinball DLC, we didn’t expect much. We knew that ZEN Pinball is the best pinball machine simulator out there, and thought it’ll be another fun table for us to enjoy.

In a sense, it’s true. But once you play this table, you’ll immediately notice the difference. It feels like a whole new experience not just in terms visuals and sound, but in the game mechanics as well. We always welcome change when it works.  And this one works damn well.

But before we get into the gameplay, let’s look at the table first.

As all the other ZEN Pinball tables, you can see that it’s a very detailed, beautifully designed table.
One thing we noticed on the screenshots is that the edges are aliased. But on our monitors it looked very smooth. We didn’t understand why, but if you think these screenshots are nice, wait until you play on it.

Look at those beautiful boobs... I mean characters.

Sound effects are well fit, with nice voice acting. It’s not as ‘classic’ as the basic tables that come with the game. It feels like the sounds are serious and action packed. So far so good.

Once you start playing though, you can really tell that it’s not like any other table. It feels like no matter where you hit the ball to, it immediately fights back in a speedy pace. So it’s not just a graphically decorated table with a unique playing field; it also punches you right back just like the original Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2. But once you get used to it, it’s alot of fun. Whether you do combos or not, the scores go up rather fast, giving you millions easy. So instead of finding a clever way to rack up the scores by repeating the same combos, the player’s reflexes will play a huge roll. For the first time ever, I experienced multi-ball, and it was very exciting! I’m clearly not a pinball machine fanatic, so I didn’t know much about the combo system, but I stayed alive for the sake of reviewing, and it felt good when I saw my score place in the mid to high range on the world-ranking scoreboard.

Of course, everyone has different standards when it comes to game skills, especially if it’s something as sophisticated as a pinball machine, so I’m not sure how many of our readers will agree with my sentiments on the Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 table. But if you followed the franchise, I dare say that you will not be disappointed. While the Street Fighter II Tribute table gave us the nostalgia effect with friendly visuals and gameplay, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 table is more of a challenging experience. And therefore, we love it.

Our Score: 9 /10

Another excellent addition to the best pinball simulator; ZEN Pinball.
